This special gold coin from the Royal Australian Mint celebrates the Year of the Horse (2026) in the Chinese lunar calendar.  Featuring a horse motif, this is the seventh release in the successful Lunar RAM series. In Chinese philosophy, each character is associated with a corresponding element that depends on the year.  This exclusive gold coin is struck to a Polished Plate finish and comes in an elegant coin case with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Polished Plate (PP) is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. While in high relief minting only the relief of the obverse side protrudes, the entire base of the coin is moulded into a curved shape in this domed minting process. This minting process also places special challenges before the mints. However, the effort is worth it, as it lends both the convex and concave curvature of the coin a special appearance. The worldwide mintage of this special gold coin is just 750 pieces.

The design of the gold coin

The obverse side of this exquisitely designed coin features the free-spirited horse surrounded by ginkgo leaves, symbolising hope, strength and resilience. The inscription “YEAR OF THE HORSE”, weight “1 oz” and alloy “.9999 Au” are also visible. The reverse side features the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne, surrounded by the 12 signs of the zodiac. The current sign is positioned at the 12 o’clock position above the portrait. The portrait is framed by the inscriptions “CHARLES III”, “AUSTRALIA 2026” and “100 DOLLARS”.
