Information on GOLDEN STAMP – First Swiss Postbus 1/2 oz – 2026
In collaboration with Swiss Post, philoro celebrates another milestone in Swiss postal history: 120 years of the Swiss Postbus! In 1906, Swiss Post introduced its first motorised postal services, marking the beginning of the gradual transition from the traditional horse-drawn mail coach to modern passenger transport. Three vehicles manufactured by Swiss companies Saurer, Martini and Berna were acquired for the initial trial service. These were among the first motor vehicles to carry passengers on behalf of Swiss Post, laying the foundations for the success story of the Swiss Postbus. The first motorised Postbus routes ran from Bern to the surrounding villages of Detligen, Papiermühle and Utzigen. With 14 seats each, the new vehicles offered considerably more space than the horse-drawn mail coaches they replaced. They were also around twice as fast, allowing services to run more frequently. Although the early postbuses still closely resembled traditional horse-drawn coaches and initially faced challenges including technical problems and high operating costs, they represented a significant advance in the history of Swiss transport. Over the following decades, these pioneering trials evolved into an extensive transport network that reached even the most remote regions. The Postbus became an iconic part of Switzerland’s transport heritage, a tradition that continues to this day. To mark this special anniversary, philoro pays tribute to the origins of motorised postal transport with an exclusive GOLDEN STAMP struck from half an ounce of 999.9 fine gold. The 2026 edition combines an important chapter in Swiss transport history with the enduring value of gold. It is particularly appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of historic Swiss postal imagery. Limited to just 175 pieces, this exclusive issue is a distinctive addition to any collection. As with previous editions of the GOLDEN STAMP, the “First Swiss Postbus – 2026” is presented in premium packaging with an acrylic insert that elegantly displays and protects the fine gold piece.
The Design of the Stamp
The design of the GOLDEN STAMP – First Swiss Postbus – 2026 commemorates the pioneering era of motorized mail delivery in Switzerland. The obverse of the stamp features a historic Postbus manufactured by the Swiss company Saurer, representing the first motorised vehicles introduced into service in 1906. Its distinctive design evokes the early days of motorised passenger transport and the technological advances of the early 20th century. The Main Post Office in Bern appears in the background. It played an important role as the starting point and terminus of the first motorised Postbus routes. Together, the historic vehicle and the traditional post office building bring two significant elements of Swiss postal history into focus. The design recalls the beginning of a transformation that would fundamentally change travel in Switzerland, a legacy carried on today by the country’s familiar yellow Postbuses. The reverse features an artistic depiction of Switzerland and its neighbouring countries, connected by the logistical networks linking Switzerland with the world. These connections form the backbone of an efficient postal service. The map is surrounded by the words “HISTORY OF SWISS POST” in all of Switzerland’s recognised official languages. A special highlight of this stamp is the hologram embossing on the side, which shows the Swiss Post logo. Directly below the logo are the gold stamp’s individual serial number and the year of minting, “2026”. The words “philoro 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9” are also engraved on the lower edge.
