This special gold coin from the Royal Australian Mint is dedicated to the Year of the Goat (2027) in the Chinese lunar calendar. It draws on the traditional legend in which the Jade Emperor challenged twelve animals to race across a river to determine the order of the zodiac signs. The Goat, together with the Monkey and the Rooster, crossed the river on a raft and finished in eighth place. Accordingly, the Goat features on the eighth coin in the renowned Lunar RAM series. People born in the Year of the Goat are traditionally regarded as creative and compassionate.   This exclusive gold coin is struck to a Polished Plate (PP) finish and supplied in an elegant presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Polished Plate (PP) is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. While in high relief minting only the relief of the obverse side protrudes, the entire base of the coin is moulded into a curved shape in this domed minting process. This minting process also places special challenges before the mints. However, the effort is worth it, as it lends both the convex and concave curvature of the coin a special appearance. The worldwide mintage of this special gold coin is just 750 pieces. 

The design of the gold coin

The obverse of this exquisitely designed coin depicts a goat against a background of persimmons. These fruits are regarded as symbols of prosperity and good fortune, complementing the traditional symbolism of the Chinese zodiac sign. The inscription “YEAR OF THE GOAT”, weight “1 oz” and alloy “.9999 Au” are also visible. The reverse side features the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne, surrounded by the 12 signs of the zodiac. The current sign is positioned at the 12 o’clock position above the portrait. The portrait is framed by the inscriptions “CHARLES III”, “AUSTRALIA 2027” and “100 DOLLARS”.
