The latest issue in the Perth Mint’s Lunar III series is dedicated to the Goat. The intricately designed motif draws on the Chinese zodiac, in which the Goat is the eighth sign in the twelve-year lunar cycle. Those born under the sign of the Goat in 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979 and every twelfth year before that are considered gentle, creative and compassionate. They are said to have a calm disposition, resilience, artistic talent and a thoughtful approach to life.   Alongside the standard investment versions available in the usual denominations, the Perth Mint is also issuing a Proof version (Polished Plate) of the Lunar series in gold. Polished Plate (PP) is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. Each coin is issued with a capsule including a numbered certificate of authenticity and a high-quality red case with gold engraving. The illustrations on the packaging tell the story of the Great Race, which determined the order of the animals in the Chinese zodiac.
 

The design of the gold coin

The obverse depicts a majestic goat standing upright in a mountainous landscape. Rugged terrain and a solitary tree in the background emphasise the natural character of the scene. The design is complemented by the Chinese character for Goat, the inscription “GOAT 2027” and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark. The obverse was designed by Wade Robinson.
The reverse features a portrait of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne. The portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions “CHARLES III AUSTRALIA”, the weight “1/10oz”, the fineness “9999 Au” and the face value “15 DOLLARS”.
