It has now been 14 years since the franc ceased to be legal tender in France, after it was farewelled on 17 February 2002. Similar to Austria and Germany, France was a further country to decide to say au revoir to a heritage-filled currency. Although gold coins had already existed under the name “franc” since the end of the 14th century, the franc only came to be seen as legal tender toward the end of the 18th century and, in doing so, replaced the livre.
