Information on GOLDEN STAMP – First Swiss federal stamp 1/2oz - 2025
In collaboration with Swiss Post, philoro presents another milestone in Swiss postal history: the 175th anniversary of the first Swiss federal stamp. The first postage stamps of modern-day Switzerland, inspired by the English “One Penny Black”, were introduced in Zurich in March 1843. These stamps, with values of 4 and 6 centimes, were used for local mail. The postal service was transferred to federal ownership when the federal state was founded in 1848. The first national stamps followed in 1850. Postage was regulated on 9 September 1850 through a directive stipulating that letters should only be paid for with stamps. This greatly simplified the postal service and led to a fairer distribution of costs between sender and recipient. This fine gold coin is made of pure 999.9 fine gold and weighs 1/2 ounce. The exclusive stamp is being issued as a strictly limited edition of only 175 pieces, making it a coveted collector’s item. As with the first edition of the GOLDEN STAMP – 175 Years Swiss Post, this edition also comes in high-quality packaging with an acrylic insert to protect and present the stamp perfectly.
The design of the stamp
The design of this special stamp refers to the history of Swiss Post and is inspired by Swiss Post itself. The obverse side of the stamp shows a stylised representation of the Swiss Post’s original stamp, symbolising the beginnings of Switzerland’s modern postal service. Alongside this is the year 1850, repeated several times, and the words “first Swiss federal postage stamp” in all four official languages of Switzerland. The back of the stamp shows an artistic representation of Switzerland in conjunction with its neighbouring countries, linked by the logistical connections to and from and within Switzerland that form the basis for successful postal traffic. The map is surrounded by the words “HISTORY OF SWISS POST” in all of Switzerland’s recognised official languages. A special highlight of this stamp is the hologram embossing on the side, which shows the Swiss Post logo. Directly below the logo is the individual serial number of the golden stamp and the year of minting, “2025”. The words “philoro 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9” are also engraved on the lower edge.
