Information on Silver Woolly Mammoth 2 oz – 2024
The Royal Canadian Mint's depiction of the woolly mammoth is a masterpiece of the art of engraving. The image is lended depth and texture through the use of various techniques and surface treatments, creating a vivid portrait of this fascinating Ice Age giant. The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) was a species of giant elephant that lived during the last Ice Age. Towering at a height of over three metres and weighing up to eight tonnes, it was one of the largest land animals ever to have existed on earth. The woolly mammoth's characteristic features were long, curved tusks and its thick fur, which protected it from the cold temperatures of the Ice Age. Woolly mammoths inhabited the frozen steppes around 100,000 years ago. Through adaptations to the cold climate such as thick fur, thick skin, a small tail and small ears, they managed to survive until around 12,000 years ago. Isolated populations even existed until around 4,000 years ago. One remarkable find, made in the permafrost soil of the Yukon goldfields in 2022, was a 30,000-year-old mummified woolly mammoth calf with intact skin and hair. It is the most complete frozen mammoth specimen ever found.
