The exclusive edition of King of the North in 1/4 oz fine gold is dedicated to the most famous predator from the northern polar regions, the polar bear. This coin is the successor to the very successful and popular first edition King of the South. As the largest living land predator, the polar bear can measure up to 3 metres in length and can weigh up to 600 kg. It is descended from the Siberian brown bear and spends most of its time living on the pack ice along the coasts. These strong hunters are also fantastic swimmers and can swim non-stop for days on end. Their huge paws act as paddles, while their hind legs are used like a rudder.
This exceptional gold coin is minted in polished plate and comes with a coin case and numbered certificate of authenticity. The Polished Plate (PP) finish is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate coin production processes. This special edition was made using enhanced smartminting® technology, which affords the coin an extraordinary appearance thanks to the interplay of an ultra-high relief combined with the proof quality. This technology was presented by CIT Coin Invest at the 2020 World Money Fair in Berlin for the first time. The worldwide circulation of this exclusive gold coin is just 250 copies.
The design of the gold coin
King of the north - the polar bear - graces the obverse side in a majestic frontal view. Its imposing roar, immortalised in the side profile, echoes through the icy landscape. Its dense fur and fine facial features are brought to life through precise and detailed embossing in ultra-high relief, while the enormous mouth emphasises its undisputed dominance. Adorning the background is a stylised bear portrait in smooth lines, emphasising its cautious but proud aura. The crowning glory is the inscription "KING OF THE NORTH", whereby the "O" is skilfully used to delineate the outline of the polar region and the polar bear appears to be tearing through the coin with a razor-sharp claw and holding the coin, showing its value, in its icy grip. The ultra-high relief makes the claws appear as if they are protruding from the coin - emphasising the bear's brute strength. The centre features a portrait of King Charles III, framed by the inscription "CHARLES III", country of origin "COOK ISLANDS", face value "25 DOLLARS" and the year "2024". Detailed ornaments adorn the background and form a noble frame for the King of the Arctic.
