Information about silver Krugerrand 2 oz proof – 2024
First released in 2017, the Krugerrand is seeing a silver sequel in “proof” minting quality in 2023. Proof coinage is particularly sought after by collectors and entails one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. Its big brother, the South African Krugerrand gold coin, is probably the best-known bullion coin in its segment.
In contrast to the bullion coin, this exclusive silver Krugerrand coin is produced in proof quality by the South African Mint. The exclusive silver coin is supplied in its original coin case with an accompanying certificate of authenticity. The silver coin is limited to a mintage of 10,000 pieces.
The design of the silver coin
The obverse of the Krugerrand coin features the portrait of South African State President Paul Kruger (1882–1902), who is also the namesake of the coin. The “rand” designation is the name of South Africa’s currency. Kruger’s likeness is framed by the lettering of the issuing country, “SUID-AFRICA - SOUTH AFRICA”.
The year of issue, “2024”, and the legendary springbok, the heraldic animal of the Republic of South Africa, are depicted on the reverse of the coin. In addition, a typical South African semi-desert is depicted in the background behind the springbok. The initials “CLS”, for South African sculptor Coert Lourens Steynberg, are integrated onto the reverse next to the indication of the fine weight.
