The China Panda is a Chinese bullion coin with a fineness of 999. It has been minted by the China Mint as well as China Gold Coin Incorporation (CGCI) since 1982. The panda’s unique appearance, with a black and white pelt and gentle yet bear-like countenance, is a source of fascination for people in China as well as the entire world. The China Panda gold coin was minted in 1 ounce and 1/10 ounce versions without any face value in 1982. Since 1983, it has had a face value in yuan and been complemented by 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/20 ounce versions, and partially also 12 ounce and 1 kilogram coins. The China Panda gold coin is legal tender. The China Panda in gold and silver is issued without an indication of its weight in imperial ounces as China Gold Coin Incorporation has switched to the European metric system.

 

The issue of the silver China Panda 150 g proof - 2024 is produced in “proof” minting quality – the highest level – and is partially coloured (iridescent toning). Proof coinage is particularly sought after by collectors and entails one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. The coin is supplied in its original coin case with a certificate of authenticity. The mintage is limited to 30,000 pieces worldwide.

 

The design of the silver coin

The obverse shows a panda mother cuddling its adorable offspring. Moreover, the coin bears its weight of “150g”, fineness of “Ag.999” and face value of “50 YUAN”. The leaves visible in the background also shimmer in various colours (iridescently). Like all coins in the Panda series, the reverse shows the year of issue, “2024”, and the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Wrapped around the temple are the characters “中华人民共和国” (People’s Republic of China).
