Information about Silver Lunar Dragon 1 oz proof domed coin – RAM 2024
This special, domed silver coin from the Royal Australian Mint is dedicated to the Year of the Dragon (2024) in the Chinese lunar calendar. The dragon is one of the mightiest and most popular signs in the Chinese zodiac. It stands for power, success, luck and prosperity. People who are born in the Year of the Dragon are deemed intelligent, ambitious, brave and enthusiastic. The dragon is the fifth sign in the twelve-year lunar calendar. It reflects a traditional story where the Jade Emperor had the twelve animals of the zodiac compete with each other in a race across a river to decide the order in which they would be put in the calendar. Everyone thought that the dragon would come first as he could fly, however he stopped to help out some villages on the way. The dragon felt pity for the rabbit and wanted to finish the race after him, which is how the rabbit took fourth place.
This exclusive silver coin has been struck in proof quality and comes with an elegant coin case and numbered certificate of authenticity. Proof coinage is particularly sought after by collectors and entails one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. While high-relief minting sees only the relief of the obverse being raised above the outer edge, domed minting – as visible here – involves the entire base of the coin being moulded into a domed shape. This minting process also comes with challenges for minters. However, the effort is worth it as both the convex and concave curvature of the coin create a special appearance.
The worldwide mintage of this exceptional silver coin is just 7,500 pieces.
