This special coin from Swissmint is one piece in a three-part series on the theme of “Energy of the Future” and is the first issue in the series. Hydropower is an important factor in Switzerland’s electricity supply, with almost 55% of the energy mix based on hydropower. In honour of the important source of energy, Swissmint launched this first issue of the series in 2021 and minted Hydropower as the first coin. Hydro, a practically inexhaustible source of energy, is intended to help Switzerland to move further away from oil and nuclear power.
The aim behind the “Energy of the Future” series is to draw attention to current global warming issues.
The design of the silver coin
The obverse shows a hydroelectric power station with a flowing river of blue water. The motif is inscribed with “WASSERENERGIE EAU ACQUA” and can be translated as “water”. The special aspect of this coin is the fluorescent effect which only emerges in the dark. This fluorescent effect on the coin is a first attempt by Swissmint and has so far been met with great demand. The reverse of the coin shows the value “20 FR”, the year of issue “2021” and the inscription “Confoederatio Helvetica”.
