This special coin from Swissmint is one piece in a three-part series on the theme of “Energy of the Future” and is the second issue in the series. Solar energy, wind and water are all renewable energies, though solar and wind energy make up a small proportion of Switzerland’s electricity supply. In honour of the important source of energy, Swissmint released this special coin in 2022. Solar energy, a practically inexhaustible source, is intended to help Switzerland to move further away from oil and nuclear power. 

The aim behind the “Energy of the Future” series is to draw attention to current global warming issues.

The design of the silver coin

The obverse shows the sun with orange rays as well as different variants of the sun reflectors. The motif is inscribed with “SONNENENERGIE SOLEIL SOL” and can be translated as “sun”. The special aspect of this coin is the fluorescent effect which only emerges in the dark. The reverse of the coin shows the value “20 FR”, the year of issue “2022” and the inscription “Confoederatio Helvetica”.
