The South African coin “Silver Rhinoceros 1 oz – Big Five Series II – 2022” is produced by the South African Mint. This coin is the third issue in the popular “Big Five II” coin series. The “Big Five” include: the elephant, lion, buffalo, rhinoceros and leopard. All these fascinating animals symbolise African fauna.
The South African Mint has devised something special for this coin: if you place the two coins next to each other, you get a complete close-up portrait of a rhinoceros. When you add several of these coins next to each other, you even see a whole herd of rhinoceros.
The 1 oz silver coin, in mint state, is strictly limited to a mintage of 15,000 pieces worldwide and is very popular with collectors. It comes supplied in blister cards.
The design of the silver coin
The motif of the coin is a fully grown rhinoceros with distinctive horns growing out of its nasal bone. The country of origin “SOUTH AFRICA”, the series name “BIG FIVE” and the year of minting “2022” can be seen below. On the reverse, two halves of a rhinoceros portrait adorn the silver coin. Between these portraits, there is a circle showing the face value “FIVE RAND”, the weight “1oz” and the fineness “Ag999”.
