Information on the 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf

The Silver Maple Leaf is a Canadian silver coin that has been minted by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1988. Like the Gold Maple Leaf, the Maple Leaf silver coin is one of the highest-selling bullion coins in the world and is particularly sought-after due to its motif, which remains the same every year. The Maple Leaf silver coin shows the maple leaf, Canada’s traditional emblem, on the obverse and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse, which is adapted every few years to reflect the regent’s current appearance. The nominal value of the Silver Maple Leaf is 5 Canadian dollars, making the coin an official means of payment in Canada. Like the gold coin, the silver coin is also inscribed in the national languages of English and French. The traditional 1-ounce version of the Maple Leaf silver coin sits alongside special editions in denominations of 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 10 ounces, each with a fineness of 999.9. Other special editions are the Privy Mark Maple Leaf coins, each of which features a small symbol, e.g. for sporting events such as the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. In addition to the Gold Maple Leaf and the Silver Maple Leaf, platinum and palladium editions of the coin have also been available since 1988 and 2005 respectively.
