Details of the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf
The Gold Maple Leaf is a Canadian coin that has been minted by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1979, making it one of the oldest gold bullion coins in the world. After the Krugerrand, the Maple Leaf gold coin is the most common gold coin in the world, with mintage figures sometimes exceeding those of the Krugerrand. The Gold Maple Leaf was originally only available as a 1 ounce coin with a nominal value of 50 Canadian dollars. Denominations of 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/2 ounce are now available. In addition, a special 1/15 ounce coin was issued in 1994. The fineness of the Maple Leaf gold coin is 999.9. The coin has also been available in silver and platinum since 1988 and in palladium since 2005.
The design of the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf
A depiction of a maple leaf, as seen on the Canadian national flag, adorns the front of the coin. As with all Commonwealth coins, the reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is updated every few years. As part of an additional visual security feature introduced in 2013, the 1 ounce version of the Maple Leaf gold coin also bears a smaller maple leaf with the last two digits of the year of minting. The coin is inscribed in English and French, Canada’s national languages.
