Information on 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand
The Gold Krugerrand is a South African gold coin that has been minted at the Rand Refinery in Germiston, near Johannesburg, since 1967. It is the most common gold bullion coin in the world and is available in denominations of 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce. The fineness of the Krugerrand gold coin is 916.7. The copper alloy gives the coin a reddish colour and increases its scratch resistance. The Krugerrand gold coin was minted at less than 50,000 ounces per year in the first three years of minting. During the oil crisis, production increased many times over, peaking at up to 6 million ounces. Sanctions were imposed due to apartheid in 1986, leading to a slump in production which lasted until the import ban was lifted in 1999. The Krugerrand is named after South African President Paul Kruger (1825-1904), whose likeness is shown on the front of the coin, and the South African currency, the rand. The reverse of the coin depicts a springbok antelope, the Republic of South Africa’s heraldic animal. Although the coin does not have a currency denomination, it is considered official currency in South Africa. The nominal value is set every working day in relation to the price of gold, with London gold fixing serving as a value indicator.
