Information about 20 Italian lira, gold
Historically, Italy has enjoyed a long and positive relationship with gold as its currency; the bimetallic system existed in Italy since antiquity and was established by the Romans. It has been highly esteemed amongst the population since then. Unlike other coins in the Latin Monetary Union (LMU), the lira was not minted by just one mint. Rather, there were dozens of minting facilities in Italy that had government permission to mint the coins.
The Italian 20 lira coin has an unmistakable resemblance to the Swiss Helvetia 20 franc coin and the French 20 franc coin. All these coins share the same features, with the coat of arms of the respective issue country on the obverse plus the face value of the currency itself. Why is it that France, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium all struck similar coins? The Latin Monetary Union, or LMU for short, was de facto created in 1865 and was able to stay widespread across Europe until 1914. The aim of the LMU was to establish a single, bimetallic currency standard that was the same for everyone. That is why the Helvetia, lira and French franc share the same features.
