The Gold Vienna Philharmonic is a gold coin from Austria and has been issued by Münze Österreich (the Austrian mint) since 1989. The Gold Philharmonic is the second European bullion coin made of gold after the Gold Britannia and has legal tender status. Since the currency changeover in 2002, the coin is now denominated in euros instead of Austrian schillings. It is still the only bullion coin in Europe with a euro face value.
The Gold Vienna Philharmonic has a fineness of 999.9. The coin was initially issued in 1 ounce and 1/4 ounce pieces, though it is now available in 1/2 ounce, 1/10 ounce and, since 2014, 1/25 ounce pieces. The selling price corresponds to the gold price on the current day plus a small premium. The Gold Vienna Philharmonic is particularly significant in North America and Japan. The Vienna Philharmonic has also been available as a silver coin since 2008.
Design of the Gold Philharmonic 1/4
The design of the gold coin has always been the same, apart from the year of minting. The obverse of the Gold Vienna Philharmonic coin depicts the famous large organ from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein Wien. The back of the Gold Philharmonic features instruments from the Vienna orchestra: a horn, a bassoon, a harp, four violins and a cello at the centre.
