Information about the Gold Vreneli

The most famous of Swiss gold coins is the Vreneli. On the obverse, the Swiss cross – the classic symbol of the confederation – refers to the origin of the coin.

The reverse of the coin shows the portrait of a woman in the foreground of a mountain massif, the year of issue, the currency and the face value. The Gold Vreneli was minted from 1897 to 1949 with different motifs and in different editions. As a result, there can be considerable price differences between different years of issue. 

How does the value of the Gold Vreneli develop?

Like any other bullion coin, the value of the 20 franc Gold Vreneli is of course linked to the price of gold. For instance, the Gold Vreneli has increased in value by more than 150% over the last 15 years. The value of the Swiss coin was roughly CHF 70 in 2003 and had risen to over CHF 200 in early 2018.

Although the coin is no longer minted by the Swiss Confederation, the Vreneli is and remains Switzerland’s most popular bullion coin and one of the world’s most sought-after coins.
